Coniston
- The Lake District
Coniston is an interesting village with no shortage of
activities, whilst making an ideal centre from which to
tour the Lake District, Coniston and the surrounding area
will keep you busy for more than just one visit.
There is a maze of scenic walks and a day may be
spent savouring the views from the tops of our local mountain
'The Coniston Old Man', Wetherlam and Dow Crag.
In and around the English Lake District there are no shortage
of scenic walks.
Activities available in and around Coniston include;
mountain biking, horse riding, climbing, paragliding,
scuba-diving etc. and of course all manner of watersports
(sailing, canoeing, windsurfing) on the lake where Donald
Campbell made his water speed record attempts and on which
Arthur Ransome set his 'Swallows and Amazons' adventure
stories. A ride on the magical Victorian steam passenger
yacht 'Gondola' is a must, and highly recommended is a
visit to the ancient Coppermines Valley, where locals
have worked and quarried for centuries.
Nearby to Townson Ground you will find the picturesque
Tarn Hows and the start of trails leading into Grizedale
Forest. A short walk along the lane will lead you
to 'Brantwood', home between 1872 and 1900 to eminent
poet, artist and philosopher, John Ruskin. Two miles
over the hill, in the quaint and historic village of Hawkshead,
and all manner of places connected to Beatrix Potter and
her tales of Peter Rabbit and friends.
In Coniston village itself you will find several public
houses and eating places, a collection of gift and outdoor
pursuit shops, one small supermarket and a grocery/butcher
shop.
There are many tea rooms, one of which
is also the bakery, a post office and a petrol station.
Below you will find relevant links to sites
in the area, so you can learn more, we look forward to
welcoming you to Coniston soon...
